Jay-Z’s Oscars after-party was a continuation of the drama that was displayed at this year’s event. Celebrity guests who were arriving at the party had to make their way through a crowd of angry protesters.
Rihanna, Saweetie, Kim Kardashian, and Diddy were a few of the celebrities in attendance at the Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood. The iconic hotel has been under fire lately due to employee claims of mistreatment and discrimination.
Other guests in attendance included Winnie Harlow, Khloe Kardashian, Jessica Alba, Justin Timberlake, French Montana, Zoe Kravitz, and Troy Kotsur, the first deaf man to win an Oscar.
Leading up to the event, Jay-Z received backlash for his choice of venue. Fans urged him to change locations due to the toxic work environment and racial discrimination that employees faced. The owner, André Balazs reportedly fired more than 200 employees during the coronavirus pandemic.
Angry protesters surrounded by a ring of police and security were yelling with signs outside of the event.
“There was an enormous security and police force that Jay-Z and Chateau must have called in,” Unite Here Local Union 11 Co-President Kurt Petersen told Page Six. “I have never seen so many private security guards in my life in one event. You would have thought it was Camp David or the White House.”
He added, “We find it ironic that Jay-Z is about fighting back against the man and he had enormous support from the police.”
The hotel has been subject to an ongoing boycott since 2020, which Gabrielle Union, Spike Lee, Issa Rae, Jane Fonda, and Sarah Silverman have all publicly backed.
Former staffer Keisha Banks commented on Jay-Z throwing his afterparty at the Chateau, “We constantly see Black elites putting their fame and money before their fans.”
“By now, Jay-Z and Beyoncé must be aware that Chateau’s workers have spoken out about being mistreated. They should be leveraging and moving their dollars elsewhere in solidarity with the people they claim to support and who are calling out for justice,” Banks said.
