Charli D’Amelio has been the most followed TikTok influencer since she surpassed Loren Gray in March 2020. As of Wednesday, Khaby Lame claimed the top spot.
Comedian Khabane Lame, known to his followers as Khaby Lame, delivers his fans parody videos mocking other content creators using just facial expressions. Without ever speaking, he has become the most followed person on TikTok.
Lame now has 143.4 million followers compared to D’Amelio’s 142.5 million. Lame has gained 3 million followers over the last week alone.
The achievement may have been with the help of his fans. When people began to realize he was coming for D’Amelio’s spot, the hashtag #KhabyToNumberOne began to trend.
Charlie D’Amelio and her sister Dixie D’Amelio have been the strongest players on the app for years, reportedly earning $27.5 million last year. Without Hollywood’s help or successful parents, Lame found himself the king of TikTok on his own.
Lame’s rise to the top is a big win for the black community. Over the past few years, TikTok has been under fire for mistreating creators of color. Most notably, they were accused of using the algorithm to suppress black creators’ content. The backlash the company received encouraged them to pledge progress, including forming a diversity council and donating to nonprofits “that help the Black community.”
